Today marked my first day as a mentor with the John F. Kennedy High School baseball team. Stepping onto the field was a mix of excitement and some nerves. It was all about taking a step back, watching, and getting a feel for how things operate without diving into the situation too fast.
The atmosphere had good energy as the players warmed up, showing their excitement to start winter workouts and get prepared for the season. My approach was to hang back observing how they interacted with each other and the coaches. It was clear they had a strong bond, built from hours of practice and shared experiences.
As practice got underway, I focused on the details. Some players showed skills, while others were amateurs and would need a lot of development and coaching. Each observation gave me insight into the team dynamics and individual strengths.
After practice was over and now understanding a lot more about team dynamics and player personalities, it started to mold my approach and I could see exactly how I could positively impact these young athletes. Witnessing their passion for the game was inspiring. As the day ended, I left the field with a sense of anticipation for the journey ahead as a mentor to the John F. Kennedy High School baseball team. Today wrapped up the first day of a process I’m eager to see where this path leads.
